Camera does not focus in dark backgrounds

Slight dark background (eg: long covered corridor or inside of a cave)400D does not focus, whereas my friends normal digital cameras are able to take photos. This is happening even if I adjust the aperture time and ISO and the focal length. What could be the reason?...

help - my pictures are all too dark

I got my canon as a present (without the instruction manual) When printing my pictures I always have to ask the developers to lighten the pix - I can't seem to find the setting on the camera to do it before taking shots. Any advice will be appreciated - please bear in mind that I'm not a pro and need quick and easy step by step help. ...
